CHRISTOPHE LENNOX
Vanishing Act
26.09 - 26.10.24
ISCA Gallery is pleased to present Vanishing Act a solo exhibition by Oslo based Scottish artist Christophe Lennox. The show will feature a new series of paintings rich in art historical reference, exploring themes that are both deeply personal to the artist and universally experienced. His works speak to the inherent loneliness, confusion and melancholy of contemporary life, the struggles and impulses we all face.
Christophe Lennox’s unique visual vocabulary is characterized by intricate surfaces, radiant palettes, beautiful lines, spirited strokes and emotional evocation. His painterly style is reminiscent of avant-garde turn of the century artists such as Egon Schiele, Édouard Vuillard, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse. Like his forebears, he transmutes sensations and experiences onto the canvas, synthesizing stylized representations, vibrant colors and intimate themes to create evocative scenes. His paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction, depicting portraits and landscapes in an earnest and immersive manner. Employing saturated pigments of emerald green, orange, yellows, purples and reds, his paintings are often tinged with a melancholic yearning despite their radiant and dynamic color palate.
Lennox explores universal themes such as identity, attraction, sexuality, mental health, love and death through his work. Rooted in his personal experiences, he attempts to formulate his inner thoughts onto the canvas, giving physical form to the meanderings of the mind. The process of painting provides a space for him to question and understand his experiences. With every brushstroke, application, movement and removal of paint he delves into a deeply personal journey, navigating desire, addiction and vulnerability. He uses art as a way of contending with life, in particular it’s shadiest corners. By exposing the demons, tensions and underlying destructiveness we all share he attempts to make sense of an increasingly senseless world.
Christophe Lennox (b. 1986 Dundee, Scotland) holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from Concordia University in Montreal in 2012. After having lived in Canada for a decade he returned to the UK and lived in London where he gave up painting and started a bespoke furniture making company. Following the death of his grandfather, also an artist, he inherited a box of old paints and began painting again.
