ISCA Gallery is pleased to present Ingrid Toogood’s Spending time with my cat. The solo exhibition consists of a new series of works created as the country shut down due to the Covid pandemic.
The works presented were developed during a chaotic time, defined by an underlying notion that anything, and everything, could happen now. To create a routine amidst such uncertainty, Toogood began making daily collages of old paintings, about observing an unrecognizable world from the balcony. Her energetic and intense use of color, combined with gestural brushstrokes and loud patterns create such tension and excitement that all the elements appear to be shouting at each other. The paintings in the series all share a repetitive wavy form representative of an awning - as if one is sitting on a balcony looking out at the world under its shade.
Toogood’s practice focuses on painting as a medium and the transition between the two-dimensional painting and the spatial painting. Sometimes as a sculpture, other times with elements of installation and performance. The mirror and the shadow are two essential elements in her works. Both represent unstable, temporary forms of reality and offer a way of manipulating perceptions of space in two and three dimensions. The two newly produced “balcony sculptures” in the exhibition display Toogood’s continued exploration of how painting can be incorporated into space with the use of perforated mirrors and silhouettes.

Ingrid Toogood (b.1976, Sola, Norway) holds a MA from The National College of Art and Design in Oslo (2002). Recent solo exhibitions include: Borther And Sister, KinoKino, Sandnes (2020); M mourned for it, LNM, Oslo (2019); Brist, Elephant kunsthall, Lillehammer (2018); You are beautiful. You are alone, Kristiansand kunsthall (2015); Evening falls flat, Soft galleri, Oslo (2013). Her work is currently on view in the groupshow Fra balkongen at Stavanger kunstmuseum and in 2022 she will participate with the installation and the performance L longed for it at the opening show at The National Museum in Oslo. In 2018 she received a 10 -year working grant from the Government. Ingrid lives and works in Stavanger.
