LIV ERTZEID
Look down, fair moon, and bathe this scene
9.10 - 14.11.2020
ISCA Gallery is proud to present Liv Ertzeid’s solo exhibition Look down, fair moon, and bathe this scene. The exhibition consists of a new series of paintings rich in botanical symbolism and nocturnal imagery.
Ertzeid continues her exploration of gardens, flowers, vegetation, and small creatures, however her color palette has shifted to much darker, deeper hues. The paintings depict the natural world at nighttime; dusky, crepuscular scenes that simultaneously evoke the beauty, unease and horror of darkness. The introduction of animals such as birds, butterflies and bugs gives the work allegorical power. The narratives she has created in each painting are at once comical and unsettling, such as three crows standing with wide open beaks in front of an eery red sky as chubby caterpillars fall down towards their eager mouths.
Ertzeid paints in an immediate manner, with bold, gestural brush work and stylized representations that create rich, evocative scenes. Repetitive dots and patterns infuse the works with a fluid rhythm that appease the eye. The visual language she has developed is a synthesis of diverse traditions in painting, ranging from Japanese silk-prints, to post-impressionism, as well as 1960’s and 70’s advertising posters. She refuses to commit to one specific style, instead adopting a variety of approaches to painting that is uniquely hers.
