MARIANNE HURUM
Flo

ISCA Gallery is proud to present Marianne Hurum’s first solo exhibition with the gallery titled FLO (The Tides). A new series of freshly made paintings and sculptures have been produced for Hurum’s latest solo exhibition since 2019 at Lillehammer Kunstmuseum, and Oslo since 2017 at Kunstnerforbundet.

Hurum’s distinctive style—fluid, spontaneous and gestural—draws on the power of paint to alter our perception, to transcend and elevate our experience of the world. Inspired by the writing of Aldous Huxley, and the paintings of Stevie Dix and Carroll Dunham, this new series of works expands on her exploration of the painterly medium and builds on the style she has been developing over the past few years.

Seeking to move beyond the boundaries of representation, Hurum applies paint to the canvas in transparent layers, with motifs that are a mixture of caricatured figuration and restless color fields. She plays with the viewer’s perception of space and depth with translucent washes of pigment that appear like screens in front of the canvases. Parallel to the paintings, Hurum creates flat sculptures in lacquer coated aluminum. An extension of her painterly practice, she investigates how shapes and figures represented on her canvases can be translated into three dimensional objects - like imaginative communion wafers that have jumped out of the painting and onto the floor. The lacquer is used in such a way that it resembles watercolor, flowing and bubbling in places, imbuing the works with a painterly quality that is often absent in sculptural works. When installed together the paintings and sculptures enter into a playful dialogue where stand alone objects are mirrored in the surface of canvases.

Marianne Hurum’s (born 1978) restlessly inventive practice includes a variety of different medias such as painting, sculpture, photogram and jewelry  Her work is characterized by a formal and contextual in-depth research into the painterly medium paralleled with a playful and spontaneous approach to artistic creation. She holds an MFA from the Malmö Art Academy. She recently held solo exhibitions at Lillehammer Kunstmuseum, NEVVEN Gallery, Gothenburg, Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo, and has participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, Kulturhuset Stockholm, The Stavanger Art Museum, 0-0 LA and Edvard Munchs studio. Hurum lives and works in Oslo, Norway.
